This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As an enthusiastic reading teacher, I strive to ignite a passion for literature in my students. I believe that reading opens doors to new perspectives and ideas, and I want to provide my students with that invaluable opportunity. For this project, I aim to acquire class sets of two powerful novels: "Born a Crime" by Trevor Noah and "Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe

Why These Books?

"Born a Crime" is an engaging memoir that shares Trevor Noah's experiences growing up in South Africa during apartheid. It offers valuable lessons on resilience, identity, and the importance of understanding diverse cultures. My students will find Noah's humor and heartfelt storytelling captivating, which will encourage them to discuss complex socio-political issues.

"Things Fall Apart" is a timeless classic that explores the clash between traditional African culture and colonial influences. It delves into themes of change, conflict, and the consequences of colonialism. This novel will not only enhance my students' understanding of world history but also foster empathy towards different cultures.

By having a class set of each novel, my students will engage in meaningful discussions, critical thinking, and analysis of the texts. Literature is a bridge that connects us all, and these novels will allow my students to see the world through different lenses.
