My Project

We are a Native Language Immersion school that is located on original tribal lands. The students are from very diverse backgrounds and speak many different languages. One thing that all of have in common is that we all care about our environment and our food sources.

What do you do when you realize that the salmon you depend on for subsistence living and for food gathering in the summer are not as plentiful as they once were?

This is the question that has been troubling my class since the fishing was well under what is usual this summer. What we would like to do is use real-world applications to see what is causing this problem. We will be using a blend of modern science and traditional Elder knowledge to test our waters and see if they are healthy for salmon.

We will be inviting local Native Elders into our classroom to tell us stories about what salmon fishing was like when they were younger, and what fish camps are like. With the nylon fishing repair cord, we will, through traditional learning, construct several set nets to catch salmon safely at fish camp. We will then collect data on water quality from several creeks and streams in the area. Once we gather this data, we will share it with our Elders and see if they have thoughts about what the science is saying. We will use D Nets to collect macro-invertebrates. Pipets, petri dishes and water quality test kits for determining the health of our creeks and streams. The macro-invertebrates poster will be our field guide to water health and the book will serve as a comparison story to the Elders stories.

We want to help make the environment healthy to live safely off the water again.
