Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kindergarten to fifth grade students belong to a community with diverse ethnic or socio-economic backgrounds and a growing ESL population. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, our school closed through the end of the 2019-20 school year. My campus found a viable way to serve our students academically, and from a social-emotional point of view through the rest of the year in a virtual setting. We are committed to do the work we can, to create a positive, inclusive and affirming distance learning environment for our students and their lifelong learning. We always put scholars first, no matter the circumstances, and go beyond what is expected in our commitment to their learning.

My students are very engaged in learning during this time and they genuinely take advantage of the opportunities that have been created to support them from home.

All of my students have the right to receive a quality education, with the differentiation necessary to meet their needs even at a distance.

My Project

My goal is to create a distance learning environment that allows my students to connect with the language through authentic learning experiences. This setting will allow my non-native speakers or heritage learners to prepare for real-world experiences using the target language. One of the teaching strategies that I will be using during our distance learning is reading texts aloud, which will help all of my students access the material and develop their skills as active listeners. Reading is an essential element in my foreign language classroom.

Having authentic Spanish literature as a part of my teaching toolbox can be extremely helpful to my students’ language acquisition experience.

For that reason, I wish to have an authentic library, which is nothing but texts that are written in the original, natural language of the authors. These authentic Spanish books will allow my language learners to see a variety of examples of how an entire population of our world uses Spanish in their everyday life situations. The rich language found in these books will captivate their interest in the Hispanic culture and consequently, enhance their desire to learn the language.

My students and I will look forward to having an authentic classroom library with a variety of genres, filled with colors and diversity that includes intriguing selections for them when schools re-open. They will aspire to manage the library themselves, self-select books, understand genres, conduct book talks with each other, make book recommendations and most significantly, spend time reading daily.
