My Students

My students are amazing people who come from a low income housing project. The students in my class love coming to school where they are safe, fed, cared for and taught by someone who really cares about them.

Using wellness and social-emotional learning practices will unleash the full potential of every student in my class.

After recess and lunch, my class does a little bit of yoga to get them calmed down. Two of my students told their ELL teacher , "We love Ms. Sawyer's class because she teaches us yoga."

My Project

Most of my students come from a low-income housing development and can benefit from yoga and mindfulness. Yoga is a practice that encourages breathe, healing and presence and all people; young and old need to cultivate self-love and care.

This year I am fortunate enough to participate in a movement called Breathe For Change which educators are inspired to teach and learn for peace, love, and social change.

The movement envisions all people educated and empowered to be their whole and brilliant selves in their lives, relationships, and communities. Participants work to unite, train, and support educators in wellness and social-emotional learning practices to unleash the full potential of every student AND teacher. I am asking for 30 yoga mats so each child in my class can have a mat to practice on. Currently we only do standing yoga poses because we don't have mats. Having mats would allow us to do poses on the floor as well as standing.
