Through practicing yoga in the classroom, I am hoping to teach children to be more mindful students.
The students I teach are a very diverse population.
Children in this building come from all over the world. Our students also come from mainly low income backgrounds, living in the many nearby apartment complexes. This elementary school serves a total of around 950 students!
My Project
Yoga is the practice of being present. Learning to practice yoga will help students be better at focusing, relaxing, and staying calm. Children from low income families especially experience and carry with them a great deal of stress. Yoga will help students be more centered, focused, and more creative! With yoga mats for our classroom, we can practice getting focused before we get creative with art! A balanced body will help balance the students minds both on and off the yoga mat!
Today's student is over stimulated by technology and screens.
With the tools of yoga, I am hoping to teach students to 'turn off' the electronic world around them and focus on being in the present.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
