A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
We are a Three Year Old Head Start Classroom in rural Louisiana. We enjoy music and hands on activities like caring for our classroom turtles. We keep very busy with learning about our world and how it works, so we can grow up to care for our environment.
Our Head Start Center is one of 6 Head Start Centers overseen by the Natchitoches Parish Government.
We house 180 children within 10 classroom of three and four year olds at our location.
As a Federally fund program our students fall within the poverty level guidelines. Many of my students are children of parents and/or single parents with a medium age of mid twenties. My class is made up of 14 three year olds. Many of the children have limited exposure on how to care for basic needs of others and what they find within their world.
I have learned over the 14 years of teaching that visualizing and hands on activities especially in the field of science and math helps with retention in later years. These types of life related lessons shifts the individual (self) concern to a worthwhile endeavor. Caring for a tangible living creature helps them to understand how to be responsible and respectful.
These children need to be taught how to be responsible and how to play.
My Project
With the items requested, Earth Box Kit, Living Wonders Kits, and Betta House, food and books, my Students will be able to experience the Life cycle of a Butterfly and a Ladybug. They will explore and observe other insects/aquatic life and plants, so that they can grasp the development of life and understand how they are apart of the care of these life forms in our greater environment.
When one is exposed to different life forms and given the responsibility of care it opens the door for learning respect of other living things. This transfers to later educational opportunities.
Within the Head Start environment we work towards providing a foundation for their future educational experience. Science and Math are major components and you can develop an interest by hands on activities such as growing caterpillars that will morph into butterflies. Not only do they begin to understand the value and need of a growing life but literacy can be integrated into the project with wonderful books that related to the life forms. Peaking curiosity and love for life.
The opportunity to provide the experience of developing life forms and the beauty of birth leaves a lasting impression that will surface in later years.
The butterflies, ladybugs, ants, beta fish and hermit crab will give the children the opportunity to see different types of life forms.
The exposure to how life is created will hopefully help to develop a strong sense of respect and responsibility of living organisms.
By cultivating a love of environment, hopefully we can preserve our world.
