This project aims to equip 4th graders with the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions about their nutrition by engaging them in hands-on learning experiences related to food cultivation, preparation, and consumption.
Cultivating Healthy Habits Through Food Exploration Project aims to foster a dynamic learning environment where students gain practical knowledge through experimentation and exploration.
By growing and juicing their vegetables, students are more likely to be interested in consuming them. Students will learn healthy cooking methods that can be applied at home, encouraging them to make healthy food choices. Students will develop a foundational understanding of healthy eating habits by holding discussions and activities.
Students will collaborate to set up a hydroponic garden, learning about plant growth, essential nutrients, and the water cycle. They will plant vegetables and herbs of their choice, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility. Once the vegetables and herbs mature, students will harvest them and use the juicer to create healthy and delicious drinks. This activity will expose them to the concept of incorporating fresh produce into their diet. Students will experiment with the electric skillet and griddle to prepare a variety of nutritious meals. This will introduce them to different cooking techniques and healthy alternatives to fried foods. The hot plate will be used to demonstrate basic cooking methods like boiling and steaming. Students can prepare healthy grains and side dishes, understanding the importance of balanced meals.
Throughout the project, students will participate in discussions about healthy eating habits, exploring concepts like portion control, food groups, and the importance of reading food labels.
