Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a Title One school with about five hundred students. The majority of our student population is Latino and African-American, many of whom reside in temporary housing facilities in the South Bronx. Our student population is comprised of over one hundred students who have special needs and ninety-eight percent of our students are eligible for free lunch. Despite these odds and challenging circumstances, our students come to school each day and are encouraged to see our school's vision, which is for all of our students to "Be our best, love learning and inspire the world!" With a continued perspective on strong instructional practices and improving students' outcomes, we are focusing on supporting our students' academic, social, and emotional growth and development. This focus is important in that we believe students learn best through regular interactions with adults who know them well, in a supportive and safe environment.
My Project
Being a teacher of black and brown students, I would love to expose my students to literature that reflects who they are. I believe that when children can identify with characters in books they are more apt to engage and believe in themselves.
Identity is vital to student success!
I have chosen these books because students need to authentically see themselves in the learning process. These books will be only one step towards that goal. When students can engage with books that reflect their culture and their identity they tend to become more involved in the learning process. Help us to achieve this goal.
