My Students

Creative minds need creative tools! My students with Autism and Intellectual Disabilities have a distinctly individual perception of the world around them. I want to allow them the opportunity to create unique classroom books and movies to demonstrate comprehension of specific learning objectives.

I have ten highly creative and motivated special needs children in my classroom this year!

My students have Autism and Intellectual Disabilities and are served in a high poverty school located in the beautiful state of Virginia. In spite of my student's disabilities, I have extremely high expectations of them and of myself, as their teacher. Because my students have individually unique learning styles, it is important for them to experience success on their own terms and on their own level.

My Project

I have a classroom of budding photographers, authors and film makers! This project will provide my students with the tools necessary to create movies and classroom books using inquiry based learning objectives. My students will collaborate with their non disabled peer buddies to create books and movies exploring topics across the curriculum. In science, the students can create a picture book based on their own investigations of magnets. Working collaboratively with their peer buddies, the students can create video book reports by conducting interviews. The cross curricular possibilities for using the iPads are endless!

By the very nature of their disabilities, my students are visual learners.

This is their strength! I would love to provide them with the necessary tools and opportunities to share their own unique perspectives. By providing them the opportunity to create books and movies, we will be capitalizing on their learning strengths. The iPads are perfect for the sensory seeking, visual learner who has difficulty writing and producing typical answers to typical assessments.
