This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Many high school students, particularly those who struggle with social interactions or come from less advantaged backgrounds, may lack opportunities to develop essential social skills and proper etiquette. This can lead to feelings of isolation, difficulty navigating social situations, and reduced self-esteem. Traditional classroom settings often don't provide the practical, hands-on experience needed to cultivate these crucial life skills.

An afternoon tea program offers an ideal setting for learning and practicing social graces in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

The program will consist of weekly sessions, each featuring:

Etiquette Instruction- Brief, interactive lessons covering topics such as introductions, conversation skills, table manners, appropriate attire, and basic social graces.

Afternoon Tea Service- A formal or semi-formal afternoon tea setting with a selection of teas, finger sandwiches, scones, pastries, and other treats. This provides a practical application of the etiquette lessons learned. The menu will be based on what the students are learning to cook that week in my culinary classes.

Guided Conversation and Activities- Facilitated discussions and activities designed to encourage interaction, build rapport, and practice conversational skills with a weekly rotation of the groups.

Mentorship- Pairing students with adult mentors from the community who can provide guidance and support in the future. This could also develop into an afterschool club, which I am willing to commit to, or a monthly networking event for high school seniors to meet with potential employers in the hospitality industry in a coop setting.

The "Cultivating Connections" afternoon tea program offers a valuable opportunity to equip high school students with essential social skills and etiquette in a supportive and engaging environment. By investing in this program, we can empower students to navigate social situations with confidence, build meaningful connections, and thrive both in school and beyond.
