My third graders will embark on a journey to see the world through the eyes of others and work towards alleviating suffering. We will use carefully chosen books to build compassion, empathy, and kindness. Books such as Red Parka Mary (a Native American resource), I Am Human, and Listening with My Heart: A Story of Kindness and Self-Compassion will help students understand diverse perspectives and the importance of compassion. These stories will provide a foundation for discussions and activities that nurture empathy and compassion.

Incorporating a variety of snacks into our classroom activities will play a crucial role in teaching compassion, empathy, and kindness.

By sharing and enjoying snacks together, students will have the opportunity to practice generosity and thoughtfulness. These shared food experiences will serve as a platform for discussions on the importance of kindness, as students learn to think about the needs and feelings of their peers. Additionally, the act of sharing snacks will reinforce the values of empathy and community, as students experience the joy and satisfaction of giving and receiving.

To measure success, students will maintain reflective journals where they document their feelings, thoughts, and learnings about compassion and empathy. They will write about the stories they read and the activities they participate in. Regular class discussions will allow students to express their thoughts and share their experiences. I will observe and assess their ability to articulate understanding and show empathy. Peer feedback will also play a role, as students give and receive feedback on compassionate behaviors, reinforcing positive actions and understanding of empathy. We will track acts of kindness within the classroom and the school community, documenting and celebrating helping others, sharing, and showing appreciation. This project will enrich their lives and positively impact their relationships, fostering a more compassionate and empathetic community.
