Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

As reading specialist, I work with young children teaching them to read while hopefully fostering a love for books and reading. Reading books aloud is one of several very important activities for building fluency and knowledge in children. Books can also help us better understand ourselves and each other. I want to add social-emotional learning books into our read-aloud rotation so my students have the opportunity to gain an understanding of themselves, as well as others. I will then leave the books out in the library area to for the students to enjoy on their new student sized sofa. Rewards will be given out when students show kindness, empathy and compassion to others.

Reading our new SEL books, will let the students experience compassion, empathy and kindness through the eyes of others.

Having books that model these behaviors will help students develop as good citizens, creating better communities in the classroom, school and eventually the world.

I will measure the students' understanding through conversations, having them share ideas, through pictures and ultimately, through their actions.
