This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The Spanish Dual Language Program at my school has only been in place for 4.5 years. This has resulted in a limited number of Spanish texts for our Spanish Dual Language students to choose from. These books will help us complete a partial classroom set of Stargirl and add a new, culturally relevant book to our classroom set. As a class we read a different book every year. (I have them for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade.) At the moment we do not have a full classroom set of any books. When reading together, students always have to share and can't take the books home because there aren't enough to go around. This will allow students more freedom to sit in different areas around our class while we read and the ability to take home the books to finish assignments or read a part they may have missed when they were absent.

Help our Dual Language native and emerging Spanish students continue expanding their Spanish repertoire by engaging in culturally relevant materials like Pocho.

This book explores the experiences of a boy who, like my students, doesn't speak perfect Spanish and grapples with how that impacts his identity as a Latino in the United States. Both books, Stargirl and Pocho, allow my students to see how teens are navigating school and how their identities impact their experiences.
