Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My third grade scholars are becoming independent readers and are excited about learning in person! This year we will develop our reading skills in fun and innovative ways!

Students are returning to in-person learning at a variety of different academic levels.

Some student are entering 3rd grade reading at a kinder level due to their lack of classroom experience.

To help bridge and foster a love of reading, we are ready to begin reading together as a class community. To do so, we need current literature that aligns and support student engagement. This includes characters and plots that represent them and themes they can identify with. Our community is 99% Latino, and it is important that we read books that students can relate to and indentify with.

My Project

As we transition to in person learning after being online for over one year, our class is ready to begin the journey of reading our first chapter book together! We will read a story about Stella, a Mexican-American immigrant, who hopes that the new student in her third grade class will finally help her feel like she belongs. Students will relate to the characters and their experience in multiple ways. While reading, we will annotate the text with colorful pens and highlighters on post-its and create a bulletin board together to monitor our journey with our main character.

In addition, as a class we will learn to develop a growth mindset, viewing challenges as opportunities for growth.

Children with a growth mindset see challenges as opportunities to grow because they understand that they can improve their abilities by pushing themselves. If something is hard, they understand it will push them to get better. This school year will be hard, but together we will get through and have the best year ever!
