My Project

I've been an educator for over 11 years and I've enjoyed the opportunity to help my student learn and grow. Unfortunately, in recent years, I noticed a significant decline in the desire to read. School curriculums tend to be more focused on texts that help students learn different instructional skills which is important. However, what happened to cultivating a joy for reading?

Manga books provide students with a text and pictures to help them understand the story's plot, make inferences about important messages in the story, and make meaningful connections to their own personal lives.

When I was a classroom teacher, I provided my students with many fun opportunities to read the things they found most engaging, relatable, and inspiring. As an English Language Development Interventionist, I have the opportunity to work with students in grades 2-8. However, we no longer have classroom libraries nor a central school-wide library. One day I brought one of my personal manga books from "My Hero Academia" to school and ever since then, students have been asking me to read them more and more. I noticed it even helped to engage students who regularly misbehaved and hated reading.

As an educator, one of my goals has always been to cultivate a love of reading within my students. It has been my experience that students who struggle with reading, mainly do so because they don't have access to things they actually enjoy reading and learning about. If we can provide students with resources that spark their interests and relate to things they are passionate about, we can cultivate a love of reading. I plan to use these books to create reading homework projects where students can apply the skills they learned from class in fun, engaging, and enjoyable ways.
