Cultivating a Love of Reading Through Reading Workshop

My students need these books because they will spark the curiosity and interest of even the most reluctant readers (and swiftly convert them to voracious readers)! Many align with the grade 4 state standards for math/science.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the privilege to teach 29 ambitious, creative, and capable fourth grade students this upcoming school year (my third year teaching). These students attend a Level 5 "turnaround" school where 87% of students are “high needs” and 54% speak a first language other than English. I know that these students are entirely capable and will make great strides this year. They’re simply lacking the necessary tools/resources that could really make a difference in their learning.

Some of my students already harbor a love or reading, while others really need some inspiration, encouragement, and the tools to help them succeed.

It's my goal this year to cultivate a love of reading in my students, and to further challenge those who already possess it.

My Project

These books would make a profound difference in the reading lives of my students. Since we've adopted the Reading Workshop (which is a far more authentic and balanced method of literacy instruction that is differentiated by nature), students will be independently reading books at their reading level (at just the right level of challenge). However, many children are unfortunately "reluctant" readers.

These books will help entice the more reluctant readers since there is a wide variety of genres and topics.

I purposefully selected books that feature characters my students will identify with so they'll be far more likely to pick up a book willingly and not want to part with it after the 30-45 minute independent reading block. My goal this year is for ALL of my students to love reading, to do so consistently of their own volition, and to be equipped with the necessary strategies and skills to improve as readers. For that to happen I need a wide range of texts at a wide range of levels.

Any donation would be greatly appreciated and would be a contribution to this major endeavor.
