Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a third grade teacher at an elementary school in the Highbridge section of the Bronx. This neighborhood, once neglected and abandoned, was recently highlighted in the news as a community on the road to recovery. The children of this community are bright, energetic and determined, despite their socio-economic status. Many of them have never been out of the borough of the Bronx. Hence, the only way most of these children get to see, explore, or "visit" other communities is through books and yes, through the dreaded television! My third graders would desperately love to have their own TV/VCR for use with a selection of subject-related videocassettes. All materials would be used in conjunction with the following core curriculum subjects: Literature/Reading, Mathematics and Social Studies. Even though we have a relatively small teaching staff, we have very limited access to the one television and VCR (small, missing remotes, bad sound quality). In most instances, when I have requested the television, it is booked for days at a time, and many teachable moments are lost. It is important children know that television not only entertains, but also teaches. Children today are so stimulated by moving images. Good or bad, these images play an integral part in triggering their active imaginations. My goal is to use that trigger to capture their minds/hearts and start them on the life-long journey and adventure of reading. This is no easy task! However, it worked very well with most of my students last year. I have started every year by introducing my kids to Oliver Twist, a Charles Dickens classic I loved as a child. The children, intrigued by Oliver's plight, easily relate to this orphaned child, as he is their age, but not in school! The lesson or read aloud began with a colorful display of key words all over the blackboard. As the children selected words at random, and discussed possible meanings, I asked that they tell me the first thing that came into their heads (another word/phrase or a visual of some past experience). We were able to read at least three chapters each day and once done with the book, the children pretended they were Dickens and rewrote Oliver's fate. Some of the endings were hilarious and some quite sad, but not one child opted out of this assignment! Next and just for fun, the children reworked their endings to include dialogue and acted it out in front of their classmates. After the writing exercise, the children viewed "a" movie version. Although, this version was a musical, heavy with British accents, and missing details from the novel, the kids sat memorized and engaged. The movie had not quite ended when many of the students began asking questions like: “why was everybody singing and dancing, why did they talk like that, why wasn't Oliver in school, why were the children forced to work, where was Oliver's father, and why didn't anyone protect Oliver?” Naturally, the questions led to responses that explained what a MUSICAL was, the LOCATION of the story, CHILD LABOR laws, etc. Consequently, this exchange prompted some children to head for the encyclopedias during their "free time" to gather more information. In what was a wonderful "teachable moment", we incorporated literature, music and social studies!! A TV/VCR can be used during math instruction in conjunction with charts, hands-on materials (manipulatives). It is perhaps easy enough for most elementary school children to grasp the simpler mechanics and concepts behind adding and subtracting. Seeing an example in a textbook or even on an overhead projector may not spark any real or lasting understanding. Yet, for some of these same children, whether it is reading, math or science, seeing colorfully, animated images may attach meaning(s) to their minds' eye, as it is displayed through a medium with which they are comfortable and all too familiar! Thank you for listening and considering our request! The cost of a combination TV/VCR/DVD player with four-year repair contract and disc washer, purchased from JR.com, is [price], including shipping and [fulfillment].
