In her essays from Bite by Bite, Aimee Nezhukumatahil provides readers with insight into her family, her identity through-in part-the riveting description of eating a mango. Every word select for maximum impact--moving the ordinary to the extraordinary.
Help me feed my students' hunger for understanding, for identity by feeding them diverse and captivating culinary narratives: both fiction and nonfiction.
As my freshmen embark on their first year of high school, we begin the year focusing on Identity: What is my identity today? How does food and culture help shape my identity?
Culinary narratives—from Japanese to Filipino to French and beyond—serve as a guide for students to craft their own engaging narratives about food, elevating the mundane to the extraordinary. By the culmination of this unit, my students will craft their own culinary tales. These narratives will emphasize precise word choice, figurative language, and syntax to develop their unique voices and begin to address the questions: What defines my identity today? How does food and culture contribute to shaping my identity?
