My Project

Cooking enhances our mental & physical healths as well as overall wellbeing. Through this project I will provide a FAMILY-oriented culinary experience for my young chefs that celebrates their incredible cultural diversity while also building and enhancing social-emotional learning skills required in nearly every facet of life beyond the classroom. Students will learn to cook various dishes from the recipe books for family and larger groups using both the pressure cooker and crock pot as well as hot plates.

Just as cooking it is an "act" of patience and mindfulness, it also is an outlet for creative expression and, for some, an important means of communication.

Self-esteem for the individual chef is boosted when one can feel good about doing something positive for family & loved ones, peers, and even themselves. This family-oriented project will teach my students that learning to cook for others teaches us how to set--and master--achievable goals, which enhances our own feelings of accomplishment. This project will also teach the importance of wearing appropriate attire & safety (hats & aprons) while exercising creativity in the kitchen through opportunities to experiment and discover how ingredients influence the dish. Similarly, this project will demonstrate the inherent value (and role) of patience to my chefs in a multi-step process. Have you ever had one of those "I can't wait any longer to try those fresh baked cookies!" moments? If so, you know exactly what I mean!

Finally, "connectivity" to both others and to their own culinary creations will be promoted. Students will prepare, present (Lazy Susan, plates, boats, & trays), eat, store (containers) & clean together. By cooking with and for family, I aim to help my students get healthier (through established family health goals) as well as develop stronger, better relationships with the foods they choose to eat.
