Culinary Intervention in Improving Mental Health

My Project

Studies document that cooking with a caring adult/mentor tend to improve behavior, sociability, and resilience in adolescent learners. In no small way, too, culinary classes are shown to improve confidence and overall mental health in at-risk adults. Just as take-out meals & convenience foods are life-savers when life gets busy, learning to cook is ESSENTIAL to who we are as human beings. The simple act of preparing our meals roots us in our physical environment, improves our confidence, and (as numerous recent studies have shown) can even break us out of those things that tend to try to "trap" us in cycles of depression and anxiety.

Cooking not only fosters essential life-skill development alongside healthy social interactions, but it also provides a safe and nurturing environment for emotional support and growth.

I seek to provide an environment and experience for my students that can lead to big changes from seemingly small steps. As a chef, I am dedicated to promoting healthy family lifestyles through cooking. I also understand the profound impact that parents can have on supporting the mental health and well-being of their children. Our combined firsthand experiences show us the transformative power of creating nutritious meals together as a family.

Through this project and the supplies requested, I will teach my young Chefs how to achieve remarkable results in the kitchen on a BUDGET, always stressing the important roles of teamwork, adaptability & flexibility, creative thought, problem-solving, leadership, working under pressure, artistic expression, and--of course--a quality product that they can be proud of.
