This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Help my students improve their functional life skills and get hands on experiences following recipes and using various kitchen tools!

Cooking activities for people with special needs can have many benefits, including:

Independence

Cooking can help people with disabilities learn to be more independent and rely less on others.

Nutrition

Cooking can help people with disabilities learn how to prepare healthy meals for themselves.

Sensory exploration

Cooking can engage multiple senses, including touch, smell, sight, and taste.

Fine motor skills

Cooking can help develop fine motor skills, such as pouring, measuring, mixing, and decorating.

Hand-eye coordination

Cooking can help develop hand-eye coordination, which can support other skills like reading, handwriting, and playing sports.

Bilateral coordination

Cooking can help develop bilateral coordination, which is the ability to use both hands together in a coordinated manner.

Self-esteem

Cooking can be a rewarding activity that can boost self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment.

Social skills

Cooking groups with friends and family can help teach social skills.

Executive functioning

The function that allows tasks to be planned, sequenced, carried out. Think about making a cup of tea and all the different steps needed to be ordered and carried out.
