Cubbies for Little Learners: Organizing Our Preschool Classroom

My Project

I am blessed to work with some very special students. I work with students who have all different types of ability levels. Some of my students are behind with their speech and learning how to communicate functionally using words or sign. Other students were born with physical disabilities that limit their ability to grasp objects, sit up, move around, and feed themselves on their own. Still other students have neurological disabilities that inhibit their ability to comfortably function in a more conventional classroom.

Having a functional cubby system will transform our preschool classroom.

Several of my students need big pieces of equipment such as walkers, wheelchairs, and other adaptive seating in order to participate in activities with the rest of their peers. This takes up a lot of space. Space is one of the biggest issues in my classroom. Currently I have three different big pieces of furniture to serve as cubbies and a separate mailbox area for student artwork and communication between home and school. Having a new cubby system that both offers a place for students to store their possessions and a space for communication between parents and school will free up a lot of space. This extra space can be used to store our big pieces of equipment inside of the classroom rather than clog up the hallways as well as giving our students more room to play and explore within the classroom.
