Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from various walks of life, all which have led them and their families to the great urban metropolis of New York City, District 6, to pursue their American Dream. District 6 is the largest district in the City with students for whom English is a New Language (ENL). Our school is over forty-five percent ENL and about eighty-five percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch. My students come to school and to class each and every day, even on Saturdays, with a vigor to learn and a desire for success. My students have diverse educational, emotional, and social needs and as their teacher, I feel it is my responsibility to teach and afford them as many opportunities as possible.

My Project

As both the Reading Specialist and Computer Science Teacher at my school, I am constantly telling my students that reading and coding are similar, in that, both classes focus on learning a language and learning how to communicate in new and exciting ways. My students love all things technology and although I have a foundation in Mobile CS at the high school level, I would like to expand my knowledge in Computer Science so I am able to offer more than one class in the 2017-2018 school year and can better adapt my knowledge to a grades 6-8 level.

This August CS Professional Development will allow me to expand my CS knowledge and will teach me how to make CS accessible to all, specifically for my younger middle school age students.

My CS background is in the Advanced Placement Mobile Application building, and I currently teach a Mobile CS class adapted curriculum, however, I want to expand the offerings at my school, and in order to do that I need to be educated, and this PD will enable me to do that next year at my school. Thanks for coordinating this event, CSTA.
