My Students

My students are from a high-poverty area of Arkansas in the Mississippi Delta. They are highly motivated with a lot of community support, but they often lack the resources needed for activities in which they want to participate.

My athletes love to run and do very well in their Cross Country meets, even in the hills they do not have the opportunity to train on!

Cross Country is a fall sport that is often seen as a warm-up to winter sports. Runners are supplied with school jerseys in which to run and their basic needs of water and snacks are met (often by parents), but they lack team equipment which would make management of meets easier and give our students a feeling of pride in our school's XC program. I would like to see them have the chance to feel on an even par with more affluent teams when they run at meets.

My Project

Our runners need a canopy tent to take to Cross Country meets to encourage team unity. The tent currently in use is too small for the team, and we have to borrow coolers from team parents.

If we had a larger tent, it would identify the team's area and give our athletes a place to assemble and rest while waiting for their races.

It will also give athletes a designated place to store their personal belongings while they are running. I also feel it would help younger runners feel more secure when running at large meets for the first time. If we have a large cooler, we will be able to ensure that we have enough water and other drinks for our athletes and they can be stored in one container.
