Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students will be able to express their creativity in a new way. Through crochet, students will have the opportunity for self-expression through color choice and other project-making decisions. Fiber arts will help develop social emotional skills in boosting self-esteem through creative expression. Students will hone motor skills. Students will also learn analog skills outside of digital devices to help them slow down and develop areas of the brain that require offline stimulation.

Students will be able to have a sense of accomplishment completing simple amigurumi characters following specific directions to easily learn the skills of crochet.

Crochet is an excellent analog alternative to spending time on phones, iPads and other gadgets. Research is starting to show that children's developing brains are greatly impacted by too many hours spent on screens. Memory and attention wane when there is always the instant gratification of the Internet. Taking time to crochet helps a child slow down and develop those areas of the brain that require offline stimulation.
