This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The school I work for is nestled on the banks of the White River in a rural agricultural town. Many of our students travel to school from other small surrounding towns. While students are vivacious and energetic, their home life can be challenging. Eighty percent of our students come from single parent or guardian homes. Often these students are being raised by grandparents. Ninety-two percent of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Generational poverty plagues our small community, and educators realize education is the only way to break that cycle. School is a safe haven for them, and we try to make it as exciting and fun as possible.
My Project
After surveying my students about what types of projects they were interested in, many wanted to participate in science activities that they see on detective shows. Several want to be Crime Scene Investigators or Forensic Scientists later in life. My students would be thrilled to determine their blood types and use blood typing information to solve a crime. Additionally, I want to collaborate with the Criminal Justice teacher who can talk more about fingerprinting when we look at that evidence. Students will learn to detect and analyze fingerprints and blood stains to solve a classroom crime. This type of experience will be memorable for them and relevant if they choose a related career.
