Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our district purchased a curriculum called Open SciEd, which is an awesome, inclusive, and diverse curriculum focused on NGSS and inquiry based learning. We have been working tirelessly to deliver the curriculum as written, but many of our students struggle with the scientific readings, and the demand for critical thinking. We really need more hands-on experiences for them in order to maintain our classrooms and keep young learners engaged. These materials would help bring our phenomena to life, both in normal chemistry courses and in our brand new credit recovery class!

I am asking for support in bringing this hands-on experience to our most at-risk students.

I teach chemistry and FLEX Credit Recovery. My FLEX Academy students are our most at-risk students, who desperately need to recover credits before being allowed to graduate. For many of them, this is their absolute last chance. FLEX is often described as a "final tier" intervention, when all others have failed. I get students who have so much going on in their personal lives that they can't keep up with school work and have failed time and time again in a normal classroom setting. Sitting with 40+ other students and trying to relate to phenomena that are so far removed from some of my students is incredibly difficult. In my FLEX class, they get one on one support from me in a much smaller setting - however - they still aren't going to care until I can bring that same phenomenon to their fingertips.

Materials like this will really help me bring the curriculum to life. If I can keep one less kid from seeking engagement on the streets, then I will do everything in my power to make it so.
