My classroom has between 23-26 active fifth grade students during a 50 minute time period. They love to experience science hands-on/minds on- which in turn develops thinking and questioning skills.
We are a rural public school district with limited funding and we are encouraged to follow test prep guidelines. I think the children need to experience hands on activities to help their development and I think that these interactive, long term activities will enable the children to acquire an appreciation for their environment as well as engaging more exploratory parts of their brain.
Last year, I received several creatures for my classroom. My students learned so much from watching the butterfly life cycle, the ant farm and our tarantula grow and change. Several of the different creatures we received last year either died or we let them go. I would love to bring new experiences to my classroom for my children this year. The glo-fish tank and amphibian habitat will each exist as ongoing activities for research, observation, prediction, and enjoyment for the children. Each of these activities will follow specific science state benchmarks. The habitats will be set up in the classroom as observation stations and will serve as starting points for research, as well as art and creative journaling lessons. I will need all of these items to help set in motion and encourage my students learning. I need the heating pad for my tarantula’s tank.
