My Students

Our school year is off to a great start! Our day starts with morning meeting, where we sit in a circle and tell each other stories about our lives. Throughout the day, an emphasis is placed on helping one another and working together. Our classroom is a place where we value community.

Our 1st-grade classroom is made up of 26 students and 2 teachers.

It is an Integrated Co-teaching classroom. 40% of the students have special needs. The school is located in a quiet and remote area of Brooklyn. Most of our students live in a nearby housing project. Our school is a community school and an integral part of the neighborhood. At the end of the school day, the school yard is full of kids playing and parents socializing. Our school and our classroom are places where all feel welcome, and all are encouraged to flourish.

My Project

Who likes sitting at a table all day? With the resources we are requesting, like pillows and carpet, the kids will be able to spread out in the classroom and the hallway. They will be able to create cozy nooks to read in, a quiet place to write, or they can work with a friend in the hallway. After all, they're six, and most six-year-old boys and girls wouldn't choose to sit at a table for most of their day.

Donations to this project will help the children feel successful as learners.

Many of our students have low muscle tone, and something as simple as sitting in a chair is hard work. Others need to plan and learn by speaking aloud or by talking to a peer. Some kids find talk distracting. By being able to use the entire classroom, the kids will be able to find a spot which suits their learning style.
