My Students

We need to interact more! We need to interact more with engaging, nonfiction text to help us meet the common core standards. We need to interact with information to put into an interactive notebook where we can creatively demonstrate what we have learned. We need Kids Discover magazines!

The students in my classroom are high achieving 2nd graders who love to come to school.

Our school community is close knit and we enjoy the ever changing population. My students have diverse, cultural backgrounds and interests, but we all are excited to learn from one another. We enjoy working in collaborative groups and sharing our knowledge with each other. We enjoy using our critical thinking skills to evaluate new information and make judgments about what is important. We know that integrating the arts allows us to make personal connections to our learning and demonstrate what we know in creative ways.

My Project

My students need engaging, nonfiction text they can interact with. They need challenging text where they are required to apply their critical thinking skills to analyze information and create questions of their own to research in collaborative groups. Kids Discover magazines are the text we need! I am asking for 24 copies of both the Butterflies and the Measuring issues along with magazine holders to supplement our science curriculum. We will record the information we learn from the magazines and in our science texts in an interactive notebook. These notebooks will be a place for students to process and record their learning. They will be a place for students to make sense of their learning, to make connections across the curriculum, and to meet the common core standards. So these notebooks can be creative and colorful, I am requesting a class pack of markers.

This project will provide the second grade students at my school with many ways to connect to the curriculum.

They will be given engaging text, written at their level. They will be recording their learning and observations in interactive science journals. They will be collaborating with peers to research, and they will be applying their critical thinking skills. I hope with the help of generous donors that I can get these valuable resources into the hands of my students.
