Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun" by Mary Lou Cook. This quote relates to my project because I want my students to use these materials to be able to create, express themselves, learn and have fun.

The majority of my students come from low-income families, and they are in the Title One Program for the free or reduced priced meal.

They are all Hispanics, with very similar personal circumstances, such as both parents working full time and one or both of them do not speaking English fluently, and not many of their parents have a college education. Some of them are newly arrived immigrants to the United States, but the majority are first-generation students whose home language is not English and who have been schooled primarily in the United States, and very few are second- or third- generation students who have learned some aspects of their heritage language at home. CANOGA is the oldest high school in the west San Fernando Valley. It opened with 14 students and 3 teachers on October 4, 1914. Now it serves more than 1400 students.

My Project

Some of the activities that my students will be able to create posters with information related to what we are learning in class. They will also create graphic organizers by analyzing stories, characters, themes, conflicts, cause and effects and important facts about the different countries that we learn in class, including their culture and traditions. Students will also be able to make their own creations such as skulls, cards, posters for Dia de los Muertos, and for Mother's Day. My students will learn to work in groups, share information, and learn from others. The material will provide them with opportunities to be more creative and to have fun at the same time.

This project will improve my classroom in a positive way because it will provide tools that my students need to be able to organize their ideas and share them with the rest of the class.

It will also provide the opportunity to be creative and show their understanding about the different cultural events we will be learning in class. This project will change my students' lives because it will allow them to express themselves, and be creative and not be limited due to lack of materials.
