My Students

The students in my school are, for the first time in the school's history, receiving a comprehensive arts education. In my theater classroom students will explore stories and characters, create their own original works, and study some of the important artists and playwrights of yesterday and today.

Many of my students are economically disadvantaged and suffered great losses during Hurricane Sandy.

The arts exposure they are receiving in school is likely the only opportunity many of them will have to experience creative play, exploration, play writing and performance. My school has a very dedicated staff and both the school and the surrounding community have a reputation of doing everything possible to create as many opportunities for the students as possible.

My Project

Using beautifully drawn picture books (some with words and some without) my students will learn about character and story creation as well as story structure. With award winning book titles such as The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg and Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak my students will explore different worlds (of monsters and mysteries!) paving their path to creating worlds of their own.My 1st graders will start the year studying stories, characters, and emotions drawing from the experiences Max has in Where the Wild Things Are. After they've collaboratively written their own original scripts based off of Max's story, they will begin to create their own imaginary worlds and characters and create and perform stories of their own.I've also requested some basic classroom supplies such as organizers, pencils, and crayons. The school does not have the budget to provide many basic supplies and in order to be successful my students need access to these supplies.

When you donate you will directly be contributing to the success of my students in not only becoming young artists and creative thinkers but becoming well-rounded, thoughtful, well-spoken citizens of the community.
