My Students

Oftentimes, we hear about differentiated instruction in the classroom. The challenge for teachers is far beyond the planning of a strategy to employ; it is sustaining the students interest while maintaining the quality and level of thinking involved.

My school is located in one of the toughest neighborhood in the inner city.

Students are generally 95% Afro-American, 4% Latino and a sprinkling of other mixed races. I have 4 classes that will potentially benefit from this project. The composition of each class reflects the total school population's proportions. They are typical young adults who are more interested in playing video games, cell phones, i-pods, etc. than opening up a book and solve a mathematics homework assignment. The comprehension levels of these students varies from poor to average to excellent. Thus, the need for differentiation.

My Project

About a month ago, I tried to log in a website and set up an activity on line as a pre-requisite of the topic on trigonometry in my Precalculus class. The students loved it so much that they wanted to do more work the following day and wanted me to finish up all the topics in three days so that they can have more "fun". They also love to do debates and technical presentation using PowerPoint, Keynote, etc. That incident inspired me to create at least one interactive lesson every other week. The problem with this kind of lesson is that there is a need for a bigger space (or a bigger thumb drive capacity) in order to gather and consolidate the results of each activity. Thus, an external hard drive with a bigger capacity would be very helpful. Since the objective of this project is to empower the students own unique capacity in learning, it is also worthwhile to record their presentations and give comprehensive feedback afterward. It is for this reason that we need the camcorder.

In this highly technological world, students always relish the opportunity to learn interactively using different tools and techniques.

This is our opportunity to help them harness the power of technology as a tool to understand concepts in mathematics and science that will be their guiding force not only in their high school courses but also hopefully will eventually inspire them to take up careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
