Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a Title I school. Ninety percent of the students we serve are socio-economically disadvantaged. Eighty-one percent of the students are Hispanic/Latino. Fourteen point two percent of the students are Asian. Three percent of the students are White, and two percent are classified as other. These kids are faced with many challenges both inside and outside of the classroom. However, those challenges do not define them. My students are encouraged to persevere and overcome through hard work. My course involves project-based learning to encourage students to become problem solvers and critical thinkers, so they have the skills necessary to succeed in life.

My Project

Every year, my 12th-grade economic students apply their knowledge of supply, demand, and markets by researching and creating their own products. Students must actually create and sell their products in order to find the input costs, total revenue, profit, and break-even point. They also conduct market research by creating and giving demand surveys. In order to increase sales, students also create an ad campaign that can be seen throughout the campus. Lastly, students present their entire business plan in a Shark Tank simulation. This exercise provides them with the opportunity to learn interview skills.

My students have limited resources, limited funds, and limited parent engagement for this project.

They used to create food products; however, recent events have caused more restrictions. The Cricut and toolset would provide another resource to help make the products, while still allowing for creativity.
