Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My first-graders are extremely imaginative and creative when given the opportunities to explore with phonics manipulatives and STEM-related toys. I am currently a first-year teacher, so I only have a few options for my students to use. Regarding phonics manipulatives, like magnetic letters, my students become more engaged in building words. I have seen students make words from Dr. Seuss’ “One Fish Two Fish” to building their weekly sight words. For STEM-related play, I was able to borrow brain flakes from another teacher and have seen my students design everything from swings and slides to constructing a trap for a leprechaun.

With these new STEM and phonics supplies, the academic and creative possibilities are endless.

These supplies will allow them to use all the skills they have already acquired and allow them to engage in problem-solving skills important for young minds. Students can practice creating new words to build their vocabulary or create new designs using brain flakes or Legos. They can even practice fine motor skills by using tweezers to sort colored pom poms which supports their handwriting. I can’t wait to see the smiles on their faces and what they will create next with these new supplies.
