Kindergarten is a time for growing both academically and socially. I am a NY City Kindergarten teacher in a lower-income neighborhood, where often English is a second language.

My Kindergarten students are often developing their academics at the same time they are developing their friendships. They are also learning the English language, as several of them are Spanish speakers.

One of the best ways for young children to improve their language skills, and to create friendships simultaneously, is through play. I am requesting dolls, doll clothes and dress-up hats for creative play, to foster language, social skills and creativity.

By providing materials such as dolls and dress up items, the use of new language is inevitable, as well as sharing fun times with new friends.
