My Students

Recall when you were in the first grade and it was time for art? I bet you were excited to create a work of art. My first grade students enjoy when it is our scheduled time for art. Not only is art enjoyable and everyone has the "correct answer," it allows my students to remain excited about school

My energetic first grade graders come from a high poverty area, where gangs and drugs are present.

My students are bused in from this area to attend the local school, as many families do not have a mode of transportation. My school is a Title 1 school which serves a large urban city. There are approximately 900 students that attend my school, and we have a 89% poverty level. We have a free lunch program, which all of the students are able to partake. We serve breakfast to all of the students as well. We have a free after school program, which serves an afterschool snack along with homework assistance and extracurricular activities. Even though, my students come from a challenged community, they are eager to learn and be a part of a school community. Art is another avenue to continue their zest for learning. There are not any wrong answers in art! Only personal creations. Art is a wonderful channel to let all of my students to express themselves in a positive light.

My Project

I am requesting art supplies to continue to provide art lessons to my fantastic first graders. Often times, my school is not able to provide the needed materials for my art lessons. Therefore, I am asking for donations to continue art in my classroom. I reserve Fridays for art! In addition to weekly assessments my students can truly have "Fun Fridays," because of their enthusiasm to participate in our weekly art lesson.

By donating to my project, you will allow my first graders to continue their love of school through art.

Art is wonderful avenue where there is not the stressors of assessments, rather their own creative expressions of them.
