My Project

My 32 diverse students are newly 3rd graders into our ICT classroom. Every year they each teach me something new. They are creative, abstract thinkers who have a lot of energy and a lot to say, write and produce. In our ICT classroom, we have a wide range of abled students and at our Title l school, each of our students is held to high standards. We want each child in their own way, special needs or not, to meet their goals they set for themselves. We re also a project-based school that believes in showing what you learn through many projects. Having the correct materials is important, but above all, scissors that we can ALL use is the biggest tool we do not have enough of. Being a left handed learner trying to use right handed scissors is disheartening. At the end of the year, I love giving these scissors to those who can use them, this way they have them for school years to come. Also, being a special education teacher, I am constantly making accommodations for my students. One of the many accommodations made is adaptive paper. When our 3rd graders enter school in September, a lot of them do not yet have the ability to write on traditional lined paper, they are used to single sheets with dotted lines. So notebooks are a big deal in 3rd grade and making this paper for them is great, but it is always seen as something 'different'. Getting these scissors and notebooks that ALL of our students can use is a way to show we are a classroom community that services, and sees all.
