My students need Hanz Innovations, Roominate, and the Little Bits to bring out their creativity, inquiry, and cooperation. All the items will be used in our makerspace.
Playtime is the best time. Many of us may scoff at that idea but I urge this concept with my students. For 40 minutes in a day, my students will be able to tinker and play, allowing their creative juices to freely flow in a MakerSpace.
My school is located on the leeward side of an island in the Pacific Ocean.
The majority of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. They currently learn all core subjects but do not have art or music.
My classes that I have this year are wanderers and workers. Academics is a struggle for some. The MakerSpace is a time where they can learn and have fun. Perfection or accuracy is not the key, it is creativity. Being creative can lead to building knowledge, learning through play!
My Project
All of the materials (Hanz Innovations, Roominate, and the Little Bits building kits) requested will be used during the students lunch and recess hour. After introducing the materials, they will be able to access the materials with other students. During this time, they will be able to build and share what they are doing by video recording their projects (if they would like too.)
They will learn how to cooperate, and communicate when working on projects. They will also learn how to face adversity when things don't go exactly the way they planned it, finding different solutions to their problem. Lastly, I'm hoping that this will break down the walls of who can and cannot learn, setting aside, gender or ability.
I'm hoping that the materials will be able to help my students to be better problem solvers and inventors.
With the absence of art and music, this is one way to have them vent their creative steam.
My goal is to reach the students that struggle with academics. This will provide them with something that they CAN do and hopefully boost their self-confidence. In addition, I hope that the MakerSpace time will attract students that have attendance problems, enticing them to come back.
