My Students

"Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life."-Picasso. I take pleasure in knowing that creating art can be an escape or a source of expression for students when they need it most. Students will be using the new materials to explore during a personal project as well as planned lessons.

My students are diverse in many ways.

There is a great sense of school pride and student involvement in activities, sports, and volunteering. I teach some students that come from difficult backgrounds along with students with great parental support. Many of my students are new Americans coming from impoverished countries. It is truly a mix of personalities and experiences that make up my classroom population which creates an interesting source of expressive art.

My Project

Exploration is the vehicle for innovation. Having a multitude of art materials ready for use is important to cultivate students imaginations. With the new materials students will create cultural masks, artists inspired portraits, and even self portraits. A popular 8th grade project that we will be doing again with the help of this donation is the ancient cultural mask. Students will research a culture if not their own and find inspirations for how they would like to design their own clay mask. The students will glaze or paint the mask to finish it. 7th graders will be working on still life drawings using drawing pencils which will develop their realistic drawing skills. 6th graders will work on several projects involving color theory and an exploration of materials and color.

This donation will help my students with a couple of things.

They will be fortunate the have a choice of materials when it comes to their artistic growth. They are enabled to explore more which will increase their interest in the arts in the future. This is an age that requires a hook to get kids involved and interested. Having these options available will open their eyes to experiences that will develop their abilities beyond their expectations.
