My Students

Everyone deserves a chance to try! My students often need more help to participate in and complete art projects because we are missing the correct cutting tools for them to be independent.

I work with all kinds of special students with disabilities, ranging from autism to visual impairment to cerebral palsy.

Because I cover several school sites, my students are placed in various settings from general education to self-contained classrooms. They may have hand weakness which makes it difficult opening and closing standard scissors, or difficulty motor-planning the process of cutting. This means they have great difficulty meeting content standards, especially in the area of the arts. I am so grateful for Disneyland's CREATE Grant so that I can provide my students with the tools they need to succeed!

My Project

These kids are all special with unique and wonderful abilities and sometimes all you need are the right tools to do the job. With funding from the Disneyland's CREATE Grant, I hope to get a variety of adapted scissors for my students. My ultimate hope is that these adapted scissors will allow my students to engage in and independently complete art projects that they were not able to before! This will benefit several classrooms and children across our district. It will meet several VAPA standards because of the flexibility of the material including, but not limited to, VAPA standard 4.1 which asks students to "discuss works of art created in the classroom, focusing on selected elements of art" and 2.8 which asks students to create artwork based on observations of everyday life! These standards will be met by simply giving these students the ability to actually participate in the project! It will be implemented as soon as we receive funding from the Disneyland CREATE grant!

Imagine being a student without the ability to use your right arm, but desperately wanting to participate in making that wonderful fall harvest collage which is based on what your family celebrates in the fall.

Without a table top mounted scissor, you would be unable to do that on your own and would have to wait for the teacher to do it for you! By providing the right materials to the right students, EVERYONE will be able to access and enjoy all the art projects for the rest of the year!
