My Students

Our students are the the hardest working teenagers around. They are inquisitive, excited about their learning and eager for new experiences. They travel from across the city to attend our school, some commuting hours a day even as they balance significant responsibilities outside of school.

Most of our students are from immigrant families, many will be the first in their families to attend college, and almost half qualify for free and reduced lunch.

At our school, they tackle a challenging curriculum, learn two languages (on top of the numerous languages many of them already speak), read classical texts, push themselves to excel as public speakers and throughout, they support and encourage each other.

Our kids don't always have the resources to get every opportunity we'd love them to have, but we see how they eagerly jump on the chance to be exposed to the arts, take on internships, and volunteer to help others when presented with those experiences.

My Project

We begin second semester of our 9th grade literature curriculum with a study of magical realism focused around the theme of change and transformation. Students investigate short stories that push them to consider larger questions, such as What makes people, communities, and societies change? and What do we lose or gain when change happens?

We would love to add the contemporary and much celebrated novel Pet, by author Akwaeke Emezi to our study this year.

Adding a longer text gives our students the opportunity to stretch their ideas and reading stamina, learning how to evaluate and track how an author develops themes over the course of a book. Teaching Pet, which takes place in a supposed utopia that turns out to have sinister elements to it, also provides us with an excellent opportunity to explore complicated themes of community and individualism, and what choices thoughtful people must make when morals and norms are violated.

As teachers, we read this book last year and fell in love with it. We don't have the budget to buy it without support, but we're dying to share it with our students; we know they'll love it too, and grow tremendously from engaging with the ideas and characters it presents.
