This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever been bullied? The victim of a rumor? My students are putting on a play that examines rumors, homophobia, and relationships, but we can't afford costumes! Students want to make their own shirts, and the materials can be used in future productions. Help us address bullying in our school!

My students are 11th and 12th graders at a New York inner-city high school of over 3,000 students.

They are brave and bold, with 90% receiving free or reduced lunch. This class is comprised of seven different cultural backgrounds. The students have learned to work together as a theatrical ensemble to address social issues. They recently finished film projects on child soldiers, police brutality, and poverty in the U.S. Despite their own personal and financial hardships, they work toward the greater good, illuminating world problems for their peers through drama and film.

My Project

My students will use the materials to screen print t-shirts for costumes for an anti-bullying, anti-homophobia production. Students will also print shirts for our Gay-Straight Alliance moderators and counselors who will be present as resources to students during and after the production. The shirts will identify cast members and support staff. The process itself will help my students gain confidence, a sense of unity and belonging, and new skills. The screens can be reused for future productions and to create textiles to identify our students when they attend field trips.

Right now, bullying is on the rise. Homophobia permeates school hallways, as do rumors that young women are "easy." LGBTQ students are committing suicide at an alarming rate and young women are being ostracized from peer groups. My students want to create a safe space to open dialogue about teen issues and address these problems head on.
