My Students

My students are special in many ways. As their speech teacher, I work on improving a wide range of communication skills. Some of my students have difficulty expressing themselves socially. Some of my students have a limited vocabulary. Some of my students do not speak at all. I strive to find interesting and creative ways to motivate these children to express themselves and communicate effectively with the people around them.

Special education makes up an important part of our school.

My students may be identified with autism, intellectual disabilities, or learning disabilities. Whether these students are in specialized classrooms or are part of the general education setting, I work to address their needs in fun and engaging speech sessions. A majority of my students are exposed to languages other than English, in their homes, and come from low socio-economic backgrounds. Despite the obstacles stacked against them, these students come to school ready and eager to learn.

My Project

I need materials to create communication books for my special needs students. Many students with Autism have profoundly delayed communication skills. They rely on pictures to communicate their wants, needs, and interests. In a picture exchange system, students will make requests by giving you a picture of what they want. This creates a functional way for others to understand the student's needs and for the student to have a voice.

Autism severely impacts my students' ability to communicate with others.

With a picture exchange system, my students' needs are easy and clear for others to understand. This makes for smoother transitions, less frustration, and greater involvement in learning!

The materials I am requesting will be used to directly benefit my students and support the development of their communication skills. The Binders will serve as communication books. The Thermal Laminator will be used to laminate pictures and images of toys, food, and other desirable items. The Hook and Loop velcro will be used to place picture cards in the books. These communicatiomn books will serve a critical role in my students' lives and impact the way they communicate with those around them.
