My Students

"Creativity is now as important in education as literacy" -Sir Ken Robinson. Classrooms of today are much different than years ago. My students are encouraged to explore more creative and hands-on outlets to their learning. Unfortunately, we lack the tools to achieve this.

My students are part of a Title I school in a suburban Pennsylvania town.

My class is diverse and quite active. They thrive on learning from each other and in engaging ways. They are creative, thoughtful, supportive, eager and willing to take on a challenge. They come from homes where families are struggling to get by, yet many of them will happily share the shirt off their backs.

My Project

Project-Based learning and Higher Order Thinking are approaches to students' learning in which students will be required to 'do something' with what they have learned. They will create projects that will synthesize their learning across the curriculum. These projects will engage both sides of their brains, tapping into the creative and analytical sides. The requested colored pencils, markers, glue sticks and scissors will be the tools with which they create these projects. Sitting on yoga balls during learning helps focus some of our more active students, as well as others during a close reading time. It increases a student's productivity by increasing their attention. When students sit on stability balls, both sides of their brains are engaged. When the brain is stimulated, it is more focused on learning. Not only is the brain better suited to processing new information, young minds are also better able to concentrate on exams, note-taking, class discussions, and other tasks of learning. My students need 20 yoga ball chairs.

They will create STEM projects to use their math, science and technological skills. They will be able to express themselves through art and engineering. They will be better focused on their learning, which in turn I believe will allow them to become more confident in their learning and skills as they see what they are able to accomplish.
