This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school in the Bronx is a Title I, 100% free lunch school.

A large percentage of our students are Special Needs, English as a Second Language, and/or living in Temporary Housing.

They love new experiences, being creative, and working together. My students are eager to try new things and if I get excited about something they will get excited too. School is a great time for them to really be kids and to not worry about what is going on in the outside world and difficulties they may have.

My Project

I am requesting three iPads and protective cases that my students can use in my dance class. My class curriculum includes teaching the students various steps and techniques from different cultures and genres of dance. Each unit also has a creative dance-making element. Students have a choreography task related to what they have been learning. Students work usually in groups of 2-6 to create their own dances based on what they have been learning. The groups get feedback on their dances, edit their dances, and share their dances with the class.

By having these iPads, groups will be able to take turns recording each dance.

The groups will then get to watch how they did. This will allow the choreographers and dancers to self assess and reflect on their work. By watching their dances they will have a better understanding of the feedback from their peers and the teachers. By watching their dances, students will be reflective of their roles of a dancer and choreographer. They will then edit their dances and then the final sharing of the dances will also be recorded. Finally, the groups will compare their first version(s) of their dance to their final share. Students will be able to more clearly discuss what changes they may have made and what worked and what did not.
