Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One's physical environment has a lot to do with personal pride and motivation. Poor doesn't have to equal dreary. Bright, bold colors inspire us. We have the creativity now we need a Cricuit machine and supplies to make amazing, inspiring bulletin boards!

Our students are AWESOME kids with so much untapped potential locked within them.

Unfortunately very real everyday situations that assail them tend to take up a lot of space in their hearts and heads - weighing whether or not it is safe to walk home from school because they might be approached to buy drugs, learning that one of their schoolmates was shot over the weekend, wondering if there will be anything for dinner that night... Childhood should not be filled with adult worries but unfortunately for most of our students, it is. We are a high need district about an hour from New York City. As a staff, we are constantly looking for ways to add to our student's positive experiences and brighten their days while instilling a love for learning and the desire to set goals. We would like them to feel welcome, safe and inspired for the 6+ hours they are here starting when they walk in the door in the morning. Having a Cricuit and it's tools will enable us to create boards that do that!

My Project

With these materials we will be able to create innovative, bright and inspiring bulletin board displays that relate to our student's lives and learning. Most of them are very visual learners. Colorful creative boards will jump out at them and help them remember key concepts or show them we care by honoring their achievements. We have had the #1 winner in the state for 2 years in a row for the NY State Bar Association Essay contest. THAT is something to be proud of and celebrate. We want to focus on positive notoriety and news as opposed to the bad things that are constantly in the paper about the town in which they live. This will help change the student's perception of where they live and what they can do with a little effort and focus. We would also be able to design and change boards more frequently and with greater ease.

The majority of our students receive Free or reduced lunch.

They perceive their school as "poor" and "not as good as" everyone else's. Self-esteem has a big impact on future success. Highlighting the positive things happening here is one way that we can help combat the negativity that surrounds these kids and break the patterns. Bright, professional looking bulletin boards are an inexpensive way to do this. We do not have any supplies to create them. Help by Funding this project. Thank you.
