My Students

Thirty to Fifty percent of the children in my classroom are children who are identified with special needs. Disabilities include: speech and language delays, autism, developmental delays, and physical disabilities. Our program also includes, typically developing peers, English Language Learners as well as low-income families. Our Early Childhood Program is located in an Elementary School Building in a separate wing that is comprised of now five classrooms. Students attend classes for a half day either in the morning or the afternoon.

Starting with the 2016-17 school year, our Early Childhood Program became a lottery-based system, replacing the fee-based system, thus eliminating the monthly fee for students.

My Project

The block and building areas are always a very popular place for students to play. It is easily adapted to new themes and activities based upon our thematic units. Having a 10 compartment shelf will help students and me organize the materials that are used on a rotating basis. The best part about this shelf is that it isn't high enough to block the view of the area and all students are able to access the materials provided.

What can you build with unit blocks?

A city, a forest, a hospital or even a school? Students love to create and develop using precision in their building and balance to make sure towers don't fall is amazing practice in problem solving with place based opportunities. Providing books to allow children to explore helps promote early literacy concepts outside of just large group reading experiences. This helps students "bridge" the concept that literacy is all around us and can be a useful tool in many ways.
