Creating Young Adult Readers

My students need twenty new novels to help foster a healthy reading environment across multiple genres. Some of these titles include Library of Souls The Kill Order, and Silent to the Bone.

My Students

Some of my students still have to find that one novel that speaks to them and gives them a desire to continue reading. It is this unacknowledged desire that fuels my need to help them discover a love they know not they have.

I have a variety of students who are all on vastly different reading levels.

Because of this, I feel it is very important to have high-interest Young Adult novels readily available to peak their attention and creativity. I currently have a large handful of students who love to ask questions and analyze on a new level. This skill is learned mainly through self-discovery and the environment that our school facilitates on a daily basis. The students here know they are loved and have teachers who would go to the moon and back to help them. My students inspire me to be a well-rounded catalyst for their learning and to maintain a rigorous environment for education. I want them to understand that knowledge is free and through the journey of novels, they can acquire anything they need to develop their own character and life.

My Project

Since I have read a number of these novels already, I will make sure these novels are front and center to capture the attention of my students. Each week I will feature a new novel in a special area designed to attract students and make them want to ask me questions about the novel. I would like to have the majority of my students’ check-out novels from my classroom to participate in book talks or discussions on their own time. I know that with the novels I have chosen for my students, I will be able to open their minds and help them discover a new gateway to imagination and life outside the walls of my classroom. Because these will not be for assigned reading, my students will be more inclined to complete a novel on their own time and in the process, learn to fall in love with new characters and their worlds.

The selected novels will help all types of readers learn to love reading in a new way.

I hope to always encourage my students to dig deeper, ask bigger questions, and find their own answers through Fiction or Non-fiction. It is my goal to take my Freshmen and introduce them to new worlds within these walls. Since my classroom is a place of safety and serenity, they can feel comfortable perusing my selection of books daily or weekly while discovering things about themselves.
