My Students

My students are absolutely amazing in every way. Our class is complete with 25 enthusiastic, curious and animated first graders from a range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our class is an integrated co-teaching (ICT) classroom meaning that a portion of our students have special needs. Our needs range from speech and language disorders to autism and none of the labels stop any of the students from trying their hardest and always exceeding expectations. These 25 students are dedicated and excelling in the classroom is the norm!

Our class of students is a unique, clever, determined and persistent bunch with a range of interests and needs--making each and every lesson new and exciting!

My co-teacher and I take a very hands-on approach to education which allows students to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

My Project

Learning through play is essential in a first grade classroom. Through play, students gain the ability to story tell which transfers to their writing, they gain creativity which impacts their thought process and reasoning, and they gain problem solving skills which directly correlates with their academic achievement across subjects. Play is vital to elementary school learning and these materials will help my students gain skills that are necessary in the first grade.

My students need access to toys and materials that will allow them to flourish as creative, intellectual and curious learners.

They need train tracks, playdoh, blocks and toy animals in order to gain creativity and confidence. I can remember being in elementary school and building an intricate train circuit full of safari animals, community workers and sky scrappers--the ability to build allowed me to see the world in a different way. I strive to give my students such opportunities.

My students are often given access to technology and in turn do not have the necessary story telling, sharing and coping skills that are gained through simple imaginative play. My students are given choice time on a weekly basis and I would love to provide them will materials what will allow them to make the most of their time.
